University Building

Tsinghua University, established in 1911 as “Tsing Hua Imperial College,” is located in northwest Beijing on the former imperial gardens of the Qing Dynasty. Renamed "Tsing Hua College" in 1912 and becoming a full university in 1925, it has a rich history of blending Chinese and Western cultures, sciences, and humanities, shaped by influential scholars like Wang Guowei and Liang Qichao. During the War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression, Tsinghua merged with Peking and Nankai universities to form the National South-West Associated University before returning to its original location in Beijing in 1946. Following the nationwide education restructuring in 1952, it focused on engineering under President Jiang Nanxiang's leadership, becoming a leading institution for scientific and technical education. Since China's opening-up in 1978, Tsinghua has transformed into a comprehensive research university with 22 schools and 59 departments spanning science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, and more. Upholding the motto “Self-discipline and Social Commitment,” Tsinghua emphasizes global citizenship and leadership development. Its global strategy, launched in 2016 and expanded with the Global Strategy 2030, aims to foster global competence, international research collaboration, and worldwide impact. Tsinghua has also initiated alliances such as the Asian Universities Alliance and the Global Alliance of Universities on Climate, reinforcing its role as a major player in global education and research.
