KWI Research Fellowship
The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities (KWI) in Essen, Germany, offers funded research residencies for postdocs working across cultural studies, social sciences, and the humanities. Program Overview and Funding Breakdown
The Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities, Essen (KWI) offers two fellowship pathways for postdoctoral researchers at different career stages.
- KWI International Fellowship This path is open to postdocs with up to six years of experience after completing their PhD. Fellows receive a monthly allowance of €3,000 (pre‑tax).
- Thyssen Fellowship Funded by the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, this path supports researchers with several years of postdoctoral experience. Fellows receive a monthly allowance of €4,000 (pre‑tax).
NOTE: Both pathways provide access to the institute’s facilities, including administrative support, library services, event organization assistance, and technical infrastructure.

Eligibility Requirements
- Be a citizen other than Germany
- German citizens may apply if currently employed outside Germany.
- Have completed PhD in humanities, cultural studies, or social sciences.
- English is the working language. German proficiency is not required.
- Only individual applicants are accepted. Team proposals are not eligible.
